Zicam Cold Remedy is an over-the-counter homeopathic medicine that purports to reduce the duration and severity of the common cold. Zicam contains zinc gluconate. It is proposed that zinc gluconate interferes with the binding of a rhinovirus to a cellular receptor. The rhinovirus is the most common viral infecting agent in humans. “Rhin” comes from Greek, meaning “nose.” It’s so called because the rhinovirus reproduces in the nose.

Multiple studies have suggested that zinc nasal gels can shorten the length of a cold. But, zinc gluconate may also interfere with the absorption of antibiotics, so certain medicinal combinations may be unsafe.

The Food and Drug Administration considers zinc gluconate to be safe, if used and manufactured properly. That’s not to say the FDA is endorsing it as a remedy.

In fact, on June 16, 2009 the Food and Drug Administration warned Matrixx to stop selling intranasal versions of its zinc-containing Zicam Cold Remedies.

Matrixx Initiatives, maker of Zicam Cold Remedies, had to recall three of its products from store shelves. The company’s Zicam Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy swabs - the adult and kids versions.

Matrixx has been firm in defense of the safety of its products. However, last month the company said it would comply with FDA demands for the recall of zicam and started the process of formally notifying retailers, wholesalers and distributors nationwide of its recall of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, and Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs (adult and child products).

FDA Warnings
The following are comments directly from Food and Drug Administration officials regarding the Zicam side effects:

“Loss of sense of smell is a serious risk for people who use these products for relief from cold symptoms,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). “We are concerned that consumers may unknowingly use a product that could cause serious harm, and therefore we are advising them not to use these products for any reason.”

“Companies have an obligation to the public to demonstrate to the FDA that their products are safe, particularly when there is evidence they may be causing serious adverse events, and they are marketed for minor, self-limiting conditions like the common cold,” said Deborah M. Autor, director of CDER’s Office of Compliance.

Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report the adverse Zicam side effects to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program. You can do so online, by mail, fax or phone:
